SCIENCE FAIR LIBRARY PATHFINDER

 

I.  Book Resources:

    A.  Web Catalog

          1.  Go to:  www.vermilonschools.org/vhs/library

          2.  Select Library Sites.

          3.  Select Vermilion High School Library.

          4.  Type in your search term. The results should point you toward

                reference books and regular books.

     B.  Ritter Library/Clevenet

          1.  Go to:  www.vermilionschools.org/vhs/library

          2.  Select Library Sites.

          3.  Select Ritter Library.

          4.  Select the Catalog button.

          5.  Type in your search term to find out if Ritter has the books

                you need. 

          6.  If Ritter does not have the books you need, you may be able

               to order books from another participating Clevenet library

               but you must use your public library card to do so.

 

II.  Computer Resources:

     A.  Databases:

           1. Go to:  www.vermilionschools.org/vhs/library

           2.  Select General Resources-                                             

                Choose Gale Power Search:

      1.  You will have a choice of four different databases to

                           search within the Gale products: Gale Professional

                           Collection  Gale Student Resource Center Gold,

                           Gale Virtual Reference Library, and Gale Student

                           Resource Center – Junior.  There is a description

                           of each database under each title.

 

             These are Leeca Databases.   See Ms. Hunter for

              the Username and Password.

                           

2.  Choose the databases you wish to search by

     selecting/deselecting the databases using the checkmarks in the

     boxes.

3.  Type in your search term in the box. (basic search)

4.  You could also do a  subject search, publication search, or

                           advanced search.

5.   Choose the tabs at the top to see a list of the reference books,

      magazine, and newspaper articles available on your topic. 

6.   Choose the article by clicking on “full text.”  You can read

      and print the articles.

7.   To print the article, choose the printer icon at the top of  the page

      and reformat the page.  Then select File and Print.

8.   Citing sources:

      a.   Once you have found an article in a reference book

       or in a magazine, journal or newspaper, click on “How to

       Cite.”  Then choose MLA, Save, and then Open.  The citation

       information will appear.  You can copy and paste it into your

       Works Cited page.

 

IMPORTANT:  Show this citation to your teacher to make sure

that it fulfills the teacher’s requirements for a citation. OR,

 

b.  Select the Help button at the top of the page.  Select

     “Managing the Information You Find” and select  

     “ThomsonGale Resources”.  You can find examples of MLA

     and APA citation formats and use them as a guide for citing

     your sources.

 

 

     B. Encyclopedia Britannica Online –  This is an INFOHIO resource.  See

          Ms. Hunter for the Username and Password.

 

          1.  If you select the gray button, you will search all three levels of

               Britannica.

               If you select the light blue button, you will search only the high

               school level.

          2.  Type in your subject in the search box and select GO.

          3.  Select View:  Article to read the entire article.

          4.  In order to print the entire article, choose Print Article (button next

               to Print Page).

          5.  If you need to cite the article for a bibliography, choose Cite

               Article and you will be directed to the citation in either MLA or

               APA style.

          6.  You can copy and paste the citation into your Works Cited page.

     

    C.  EBSCO – This is an Infohio Database.  See Ms. Hunter for the

          Username and Password.

 

         1.  Choose Student Research Center 9-12.

         2.  Choose the types of materials you want to search by putting a check in

              the boxes. 

         3.  Type in your search term in the search box to do a basic search.  Don’t

              forget to check the box for full text located under Limit Results.  You

              could also search by Topic or do an advanced search.

         4.  When the results page shows, you can choose to see all results, or

              choose to see results in reference books, magazines, biographies,

              images, etc. by clicking in the circles.

         5.  To read the article, choose HTML full text or PDF full text.  If you choose

              PDF full text, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your

              computer in order to read this file.

         6.  To print, click on the printer icon on the article page first and then click

              on print and ok.

         7.  Citing Sources: 

              a.  If you select Citation (at the top of the page), you

                   will get information for citing the source.

              b.  If you select the Help icon at the top of the page, then

                   select “Creating a Bibliography”, then select MLA or APA,

                   you will see examples of how to cite the sources you are

                   from EBSCO.

 

  D.  Internet Sites

       1.  Go to:  www.teacheroz.com and select Table of Contents

             Look for ENGLISH, ECONOMICS, MATH, PHILOSOPHY, PSYCHOLOGY,

             SCIENCE and select Other Subjects.

       2.  In the VHS Library, go to  Internet Explorer and Favorites.  Look for the

            Science Folder.
